Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher and Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament, will be the key speakers at an event organised by the eSafety Challenge project in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 11th May 2011 to mark the launch of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.
According to UN figures, 1.3 million people are killed on the world’s roads each year and unless action is taken now, annual road deaths are forecast to rise to 1.9 million by 2020. For this reason, the UN has declared 2011–2020 the ‘UN Decade of Action for Road Safety’. The goal of the decade, endorsed by 100 governments, is to “stabilise and then reduce global road fatalities by 2020”. This could mean 5 million lives saved and 50 million injuries prevented.
As part of the Decade of Action plans, the eSafety Challenge project is organising this high-level launch event which will be hosted by Jorgo Chatzimarkakis MEP, while other speakers will include Werner Kraus, President of FIA Region I, and Didier Bollecker, Président de l’Automobile Club Association Française des Automobilistes. eSafety Challenge will support the Decade of Action’s pillar on Safer Vehicles.
Those interested in attending the event on 11th May can register by sending an email to info@esafetyaware.eu
